GANTRY CRANE DRIVE CONTROLS
THE MANUFACTURER’S CHALLENGE
This manufacturer’s existing gantry crane control system had become outdated and no longer provided the level of positioning accuracy, safety integration, diagnostics, or operator interface capability needed to support efficient steel industry operations. To address these limitations, a modern control solution was required to improve motion control performance, enhance safety compliance, streamline troubleshooting, and create a more reliable and user-friendly operating environment.
COALMONT’S TURN-KEY SOLUTION
Coalmont provided complete design, fabrication, and installation of a modern gantry crane control system featuring Rockwell Kinetix 5700 servo drives and a GuardLogix safety controller. The turnkey project included engineering design with modifications during installation, custom control panel fabrication with all drives and safety components, PLC program conversion from legacy controls, drive configuration and tuning, and complete commissioning with operator training. The system features three-axis servo control (X, Y, Z positioning), integrated safety relay systems, PanelView Plus HMI operator interface, and industrial Ethernet communications with Stratix managed switches.
This project highlights the implementation of advanced servo motion control systems to achieve precise, high-performance material handling automation in steel industry applications. US Pipe gained precise positioning control improving product quality, enhanced safety systems meeting current standards, modern diagnostics reducing troubleshooting time, and improved operator interface simplifying crane operation. The project incorporated flexible change-order accommodations - additional limit switches, push buttons, and networking components integrated as field requirements evolved, reflecting a responsive and efficient execution approach.
