MATERIAL HOIST ELECTRICAL UPGRADE
THE MANUFACTURER’S CHALLENGE
This coal mine needed to replace an outdated, unreliable, and potentially unsafe hoist control system without disrupting mine operations. Their request was a modern, compliant, and low-maintenance solution that improved safety, reliability, and diagnostics while ensuring a seamless transition and minimal production downtime.
COALMONT’S TURN-KEY SOLUTION
Coalmont delivered a complete turnkey material hoist system replacement—from medium-voltage utility connection through operator controls—for one of the mine's most critical systems. As the primary and only means of transporting material and equipment in and out of the mine, and serving as the backup man hoist when the primary bath house hoist is inoperable, this system demanded a zero-downtime approach. Our comprehensive EPC solution included designing and constructing a new electrical building and installing 4160 VAC power distribution infrastructure entirely in parallel with the operating system, enabling a weekend cutover that would have otherwise required several weeks of lost production.
The project scope encompassed an ABB DCS880 DC drive system, Allen-Bradley PLC controls with fiber optic communications, and multiple remote NEMA 4X operator stations providing complete system control from top, yard, and bottom positions. Beyond the electrical systems, we upgraded the mechanical hydraulic brakes with an electrical 'lilly'—a secondary safety speed monitor that automatically applies brakes if hoist speed exceeds safe thresholds.
This project highlights an effective approach to managing large-scale mining infrastructure—using single-source responsibility and parallel construction strategies to reduce production impact. Oak Grove Resources gained modern drive technology, enhanced safety systems including redundant overspeed protection, improved diagnostics, and reduced maintenance—all delivered on schedule with MSHA compliance and 24/7 commissioning support.
