THE MANUFACTURER’S CHALLENGE

This pulp and paper mill contacted our team after experiencing significant financial losses and reduced uptime caused by intermittent faults, unexplained quality issues, and chronic performance shortfalls that could not be diagnosed using standard PLC trending or HMI alarms. This analysis was initiated to provide high-fidelity, timestamp-accurate visibility across PLCs and drives, enabling maintenance and engineering personnel to conclusively identify root causes, systematically optimize process performance, and progress toward a robust predictive maintenance strategy.

COALMONT’S TURN-KEY SOLUTION

Coalmont configured and commissioned a turnkey IBA high-speed trending workstation providing millisecond-resolution data capture from PLCs and drives. The system includes ibaPDA for real-time acquisition with unlimited tag support, ibaHD-Server for long-term analytics enabling visualization from months to milliseconds, ibaAnalyzer for detailed data analysis, and pre-configured dashboard layouts organized by machine section. EtherNet/IP communications seamlessly integrate with existing Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and drive systems, while server-grade hardware ensures reliable 24/7 operation.

This project demonstrates the application of advanced industrial IT/OT systems that transform troubleshooting capabilities. The mill's maintenance and engineering teams gained unprecedented visibility into machine performance, enabling root cause analysis of intermittent issues, process optimization through data-driven decisions, and predictive maintenance through trend analysis.
