FOUNDRY IT NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE

THE MANUFACTURER’S CHALLENGE

This newly built foundry required a robust, standards-based network infrastructure to be installed prior to startup to ensure reliable support for production systems, business systems, and future expansion requirements. Establishing this foundation early provided a scalable architecture capable of supporting operational continuity, system integration, and long-term growth.

COALMONT’S TURN-KEY SOLUTION

Coalmont provided complete IT network infrastructure installation for Ford Meter Box's new foundry in Wabash, Indiana, establishing the physical foundation connecting equipment and cabling for daily operations and production systems. The comprehensive installation encompassed one Main Distribution Frame (MDF) room and six IT/OT Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) closets strategically located throughout the facility. Infrastructure installation included 30,000 feet of CAT6E CMP plenum-rated cable, 300 feet of cable tray (12-inch and 4-inch widths) with appropriate mounting hardware, 600 feet of conduit (EMT for office areas, RMC for plant areas), patch panels with 48 ports per IDF closet, fiber optic terminations using single-mode LC connectors, Leviton QuickPort jacks and wall plates throughout office spaces, and fire-rated cableway systems for penetrations.

This greenfield infrastructure project demonstrates how enterprise‑scale IT/OT networks can be designed and installed to ensure reliable coexistence between business systems and operational technology in new industrial facilities. Ford Meter Box gained properly structured cabling meeting TIA standards, shared IT/OT rack infrastructure enabling integrated operations, NEC-compliant conduit fill ratings ensuring electrical safety, comprehensive cable tray systems with segregation for different network types, fiber optic backbone providing high-speed connectivity between locations, systematic labeling and documentation enabling ongoing management, and turnkey installation coordinating with facility construction schedules. Through a converged IT/OT network approach, business productivity and production control systems operate on reliable, well‑documented infrastructure built for lasting scalability.
