COMPLETE TM6 DRIVE SYSTEM UPGRADE
THE MANUFACTURER’S CHALLENGE
This manufacturing mill’s previously installed 755TM drive system consistently under performed due to poor installation, a short-sighted design, and a generic CAN-style program that failed to meet the mill’s operational requirements. This design was not tailored to the customer’s needs, but rather delivered as a one-size-fits-all package, creating ongoing frustration, downtime, and inefficiencies. Due to the mill’s constant issues, they were looking to modernize their existing drives system to the state-of-the-art PowerFlex 755TM Common Bus Drives solution.
COALMONT’S TURN-KEY SOLUTION
Coalmont modernized Tissue Machine #6, a Through-Air Drying (TAD) machine, with two complete Rockwell PowerFlex 755TM multi-drive lineups featuring Regenerative Active Front Ends, replacing a legacy ABB ACS600 drive system. Our engineering team coordinated drives from 50HP to 700HP across independent motor sections, integrated ControlLogix PLC programming with the existing Honeywell DCS, installed custom encoders for precision feedback, and implemented IBA high-speed trending for advanced diagnostics. The months-long design-build cycle included extensive pre-outage preparation, enabling installation and commissioning of the complete system in less than one week.
This project exemplifies expertise in complex tissue machine modernizations, integrating precise scheduling, detailed planning, and multidisciplinary engineering execution. Georgia-Pacific achieved improved machine performance, enhanced diagnostic capabilities, reduced maintenance costs, and the operational benefits of platform standardization across their tissue machines.
